Hello Council Members,
Here is the update for the trapping week of August 7, 2007.
Summary
Starting with the good news, mosquito samples submitted from the city of
Boulder last week were again negative for the presence of WNV. The CDPHE
is now reporting 28 positive mosquito pools from Boulder County; positives
have been reported throughout the county but the majority of positives are
from the Longmont area.
As of August 9, the CDPHE is reporting 72 cases of WNV in the state, a
significant increase since last week. Nineteen cases are from Boulder
County; sixteen have been WNV fever but unfortunately two are meningitis
and one is encephalitis. For a complete listing of cases by county please
refer to the following link:

This week we captured 833 mosquitoes in our 16 city traps and 157 were
Culex (18.8% of total). The total number of mosquitoes is very similar to
last week but fortunately both the number and percent of Culex dropped
significantly for the second consecutive week.
Six pools of Culex mosquitoes were submitted to the Colorado Department
of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) for WNV testing. Results were not
yet available for this week.
Mosquito Larval Control Information
Between July 31 and August 6, 271 sites were visited; 10 sites had
non‑vector mosquitoes and 22 received Bti treatments for Culex mosquitoes.
Comparisons to last year
The total mosquito numbers (409 in 2006; 833 in 2007) and the number of
Culex (114 in 2006; 157 in 2007) are higher than this week in 2006. The
percent Culex (27.9% for 2006; 18.8% for 2007) is lower than this week in
2006.
If you have any questions, please contact Jonathan Koehn, Environmental
Affairs Manager or Kathleen Alexander, Integrated Pest Management
Coordinator.
Thanks, and have a great weekend,
Jonathan
